The news is alarming. It is a January evening, Friday the 13th — a nightmare dating scenario. Eight women mill about the museum lobby, carefully dressed and nervously snacking on a cheese and veggie platter laid out beside bottles of Champagne and wine. The clock ticks 10 minutes past p. A few men walk past the picture window on Main Street, but none turns and enters.

Hogan, now sure that no surprise attendees are in store, finally breaks the ice by gathering the women together and stating the obvious.

Nothing so starkly brings home the feeling of being single as sitting in the corner of a room staring at a wall while couples chat happily all around you. Which is exactly what happens to me at the Institute of Contemporary Arts’ first speed-dating event for artists. Someone has pulled out at the last minute, leading to a numerical mismatch of dates, so I am left to gaze vacantly into the void of loneliness for four minutes, instead of into the eyes of my first date.

This event offers arty types a chance to match up with those of a like mind, whether for romance, collaboration or friendship. These three terms head the columns to be ticked on the form you are handed upon arrival, but it is romance that most are here for. Speaking with early arrivals beforehand, it emerges that many have previously tried speed-dating, but believe the ICA’s version offers them the chance to meet someone who can maintain an intelligent conversation about culture – and is also unlikely to collect teddy bears or magazine clippings of Noel Edmonds, unless as source material for a conceptual artwork.

The rules of the event dictate that everyone must bring an example of such work to prompt discussion. This “showing your etchings” regulation has me in a state of anxiety for much of the day. I am not a visual artist, but showing dates a copy of my first book, or the manuscript or my just-completed second, seems overly egotistical, not to mention hard to digest in the regulation four minutes. So I decide to create my own text-based artwork, using five luggage labels knotted together bearing salient facts about myself, among them, “I am a writer, not an artist” and “I sometimes snore”.

Ten artists attended the event, three of whom were invited to speak to the assembled group about their practice and experiences of collaboration. While speed dating has ominous connotations in the romantic world, in the arts realm, creatives are taking advantage of the opportunities it brings. There is no doubt that the art world thrives on networks and as an artist getting your work seen is essential. For the Australian Performing Arts Market APAM , Arts NSW is hosting two speed dating sessions to assist individual artists and small to medium sized arts organisations to make national and international connections.

As with many arts professionals, Coombs Marr notes the importance of networking in her own career. However in a professional setting, it works because, essentially it is a business transaction. Arts NSW is supporting artists and organisations to unlock their full potential. We want these networking sessions to empower collaboration in new and innovative ways.

Events like APAM facilitate the consistent presentation of Australian work to international audiences, which enables local artists to be part of a growing artistic network. These initial connections led to collaborations with UK artists. The group has also presented their work in the Netherlands at the Noorderzon festival — the result of an Australian connection they met with at APAM.
